Bone meal is the amendment I add to the planting hole when I want strong roots and a good flower or fruit set. It is a slow release source of phosphorus and calcium, two nutrients that matter most when plants are establishing roots and making blooms.

Why it earned a spot in my garden

  • Better root starts. Phosphorus near the roots at planting helps transplants settle in.
  • Bloom and fruit support. Flowers, tomatoes, and peppers all lean on phosphorus when they set buds.
  • Long lasting. It breaks down slowly, so one application at planting covers a lot of the season.
  • Organic. It feeds soil life and fits with the rest of my organic routine.

How I use it

  1. Mix the label amount into the bottom of the planting hole or the top few inches of a bed.
  2. Plant as usual and water well.
  3. For bulbs, I sprinkle a little in the hole before setting the bulb.

I use it alongside a balanced feed like my 4-4-4 vegetable fertilizer, not instead of it. Bone meal has little potassium, so it is a supplement, not a complete food.

Tips for best results

  • Test your soil. Many garden soils already have plenty of phosphorus. If yours does, skip it.
  • Mind the pH. It works best in slightly acidic to neutral soil.
  • Bury it. Mixing it in keeps critters and curious dogs from digging.

Who should skip it

If your soil test shows high phosphorus, or your soil is alkaline, bone meal will not do much. Vegans and vegetarians may also prefer a plant based phosphorus source.

Common questions

What is bone meal good for?

Bone meal is a slow release source of phosphorus and calcium. Phosphorus supports root growth, flowering, and fruiting.

Does bone meal work in alkaline soil?

Phosphorus from bone meal is much less available when soil pH is above about 7. A soil test tells you whether it will help.

Can dogs get into bone meal?

Dogs are often attracted to the smell. Work it into the soil instead of leaving it on the surface, and store the bag where pets cannot reach it.
