How I keep tomatoes, peppers, and greens alive and producing through brutal summer heat.

Summer sun can cook a garden. Leaves scorch, fruit gets sunscald, and plants stop producing to survive. Shade cloth is my answer: it cuts down the intensity of the light and heat while still letting plants get plenty of sun to grow.

Why it earned a spot in my garden

  • Plants keep producing. Shaded tomatoes and peppers hold up better in heat waves.
  • Less sunscald. Fruit and leaves are protected from the harshest afternoon sun.
  • Less watering. Shaded soil and grow bags dry out more slowly.
  • Longer lettuce season. Greens bolt later when they are kept cooler.

How I use it

  1. Build a simple frame with stakes, hoops, or a cattle panel arch over the bed.
  2. Drape the cloth over the top and secure it with clips or zip ties through the grommets.
  3. Leave the sides open for airflow.
  4. Put it up when the hottest part of summer arrives and take it down when it cools off.

Tips for best results

  • Pick a lighter percentage for fruiting crops and a heavier one for lettuce and seedlings.
  • Shade the west side if you can only cover part of the bed. Afternoon sun is the harshest.
  • Make sure it is secured well. A loose shade cloth acts like a sail in the wind.

Who should skip it

If you garden in a mild climate where summer highs stay comfortable, your plants likely want all the sun they can get.

Common questions

What shade cloth percentage is best for vegetables?

For most vegetables, something in the 30 to 50 percent range is common. Higher percentages are better for shade loving plants or people, not fruiting crops.

Does shade cloth help tomatoes set fruit in the heat?

It can lower leaf and soil temperature and reduce sunscald. Very high nighttime temperatures can still stop fruit set, but shade gives plants a better chance.

Should shade cloth touch the plants?

It is best to keep it above the plants on a frame or hoops, with space for air to move underneath.
